In the heart of the High Atlas Mountains, where residents face limited access to healthcare and the nearest hospitals are many kilometers away, the Aït Bouguemez Association has taken a remarkable step to bridge this gap through a humanitarian health initiative.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday, the association organizes medical sessions dedicated to measuring glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood sugar levels for the local population. What makes this service exceptional is its affordability: offered at a symbolic cost of no more than 60 MAD (approximately $6), ensuring accessibility even for low-income families.
Tackling a “Silent Disease”
Diabetes is among the most widespread chronic illnesses in Morocco, and it is often described as a “silent killer.” In remote mountain areas like Aït Bouguemez, early diagnosis and regular monitoring are rare due to the lack of medical infrastructure. By introducing this initiative, the association is providing residents with an opportunity for early detection and ongoing monitoring, which can significantly reduce health risks and prevent complications.
A Gesture of Solidarity and Humanity
This initiative goes beyond offering a medical service; it represents a genuine act of solidarity. By keeping the price symbolic, the Aït Bouguemez Association ensures that the right to healthcare is not a privilege, but a fundamental right. It reflects a vision of community-driven development, where no one is excluded because of financial constraints.
Building a Culture of Prevention
The weekly health sessions are not limited to tests alone. They are complemented by educational guidance and medical advice on healthy eating, lifestyle choices, and diabetes prevention. Through these sessions, the association is planting the seeds of a preventive health culture—where awareness and knowledge play a central role in improving long-term well-being.
A Step Toward Strengthening Local Healthcare
Although resources remain limited, this initiative is a significant step toward addressing the healthcare challenges in the valley. With the Medical Caravans Center currently under construction in Ifrane village – Aït Bouguemez, the association will soon have a dedicated and well-equipped space to expand its activities. The center will allow for more specialized services and the hosting of medical caravans, thereby amplifying the positive impact on the local population.
